We invite you to join us as we host Portland Public Library and Longfellow Books for a Spotlight Lecture with Lisa Lucas, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation which presents the National Book Award each year. Lucas will be live in conversation with 2015 National Book Award long-listed author Michael Paterniti. 2017 National Book Award finalists will be announced just the day before, on October 4th so her talk will be timely and exciting. This program will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 6:00pm in the auditorium at the Maine Girls Academy.
Lisa Lucas is the Executive Director of the National Book Foundation. Prior to joining the Foundation, she served as the Publisher of Guernica, a nonprofit online magazine focusing on writing that explores the intersection of art and politics with an international and diverse focus. Prior to that, she served as Director of Education at the Tribeca Film Institute, on the development team at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and as a consultant for the Sundance Institute, San Francisco Film Society, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and ReelWorks Teen Filmmaking. Lucas also serves on the literary council of the Brooklyn Book Festival.

Michael Paterniti Michael Paterniti is a journalist, essayist, and bestselling author of Driving Mr. Albert, The Telling Room, named one of the best books of 2013 by NPR, Entertainment Weekly, and The Christian Science Monitor, and Love and Other Ways of dying which was long-listed for the National Book Award in 2015. Nominated for the National Magazine Award eight times, he is also the recipient of an NEA grant and two MacDowell Fellowships. His stories have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Harper’s, Outside, Esquire, and GQ, where he works as a correspondent. He is the co-founder of a The Telling Toom – a children’s storytelling center – in Portland where he lives with his wife and their three children.

The Spotlight Series is a collaboration between Portland Public Library, Longfellow Books and the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance which brings nationally touring authors to Portland to speak about new works. The series is sponsored by The Press Hotel and Bangor Savings Bank.
