Graduation exercises for Catherine McAuley High School were held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 1 at Merrill Auditorium.  Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D., Bishop of Portland, conferred diplomas, assisted by Deborah Kost, Head of School.

Mistress of Ceremonies was Class President, Sophia B. Warren.  Leslie Anne Tremberth, a 1996 graduate and Health Consultant, served as the guest speaker.  The graduates performed several musical selections, including “America the Beautiful” by Bates and Ward, “One Moment in Time” by Hammond and Bettis, and the “McAuley School Song” by Santo Donatelli.  Carolyn E. Liziewski, Valedictorian, made concluding remarks.

Valedictorian Carolyn E. Liziewski is the daughter of Sarah Liziewski and the late Daniel Liziewski of Gray.  During her time at McAuley, Liziewski served on the Student Council (Vice President and Executive Board) and was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Mock Trial and Varsity Basketball Teams.  She was an intern for the Maine State Republican Caucus, a delegate to the U.S. Senate Youth Program, and a U.S. Senate Page during her junior year.  In addition, Liziewski was the recipient of both the Harvard Book Award and the Princeton Book Award, and was recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar.  In the fall, Liziewski will study History at Princeton University.

Salutatorian Joan I. Fasulo is the daughter of Stephen and Vida Fasulo of Hollis Center.  While at McAuley, Fasulo participated in Mock Trial, McAuley’s Math Team (Co-Captain), the Social Action Club (Vice President) and was a member of the National Honor Society.  She was an active volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and Camp Sunshine, served as a tutor at St. Brigid School, and was awarded the Rotary Club Youth Leadership Award for her commitment to service.  Fasulo, a National Merit Commended Scholar and AP Scholar, will study Public Policy at the University of Virginia.

Jaclyn E. Welch is the daughter of Philip and Kate Welch of Falmouth.  During her time at McAuley, Welch was a member of the School’s Varsity Basketball and Mock Trial Teams, as well as the National Honor Society and the GSTA.  In addition to her coaching duties for Bluewave Basketball, she was the recipient of the Smith College Book Award and the University of Rochester Book Award. Welch will study Neuroscience at Bates College.

Brianna C. Heisler is the daughter of Mark and Linda Heisler of Portland.  While at McAuley, Heisler was the founder of the School’s GSTA, Captain of the Math Team, and a member of the Creative Motion Dance Company.  In addition to receiving the Williams College Book Award and serving as a tutor, Heisler was named an AP Scholar with Honor, a National Merit Commended Scholar, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She will study Chemical Engineering (with a concentration in Biochemistry) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall.

Emily A. Mazza is the daughter of Daniel Mazza III of Kittery and Tammy Mazza of Portland.  During her time at McAuley, Mazza was active with the School’s Drama Club (President) and Book Club, and was Co-Captain of the Mock Trial Team.  She also volunteered with the St. Brigid School Drama Club.  In addition, Mazza was a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, and the recipient of the Sewanee Book Award.  She will attend Smith College in the fall.

Olivia P. Smith is the daughter of Andrew and Andrea Smith of Yarmouth.  At McAuley, Smith was a member of the School’s National Honor Society, Key Club, and served as members of both the Varsity Basketball and Track Teams.  She also volunteered her time at the Good Cause Thrift Shop and in various Basketball and Special Education Summer Camp Programs.  In addition, Smith was active with AAU Basketball, was a member of the SMAA Conference All-Star 1st Team, and was the recipient of the Dartmouth College Book Award.  She will continue her education in the fall, studying Kinesiology/Biology at Dartmouth College.

Rachael A. Dalton is the daughter of Scott and Beth Dalton of Portland.  During her four years at McAuley, Dalton was the founding member of the Tea Club, active in the School’s Drama Club, and served as Class Secretary during her junior and senior years.  In addition, she volunteered her time with the Preble Street Soup Kitchen and the Next Level Church.  She was also honored with the Rensselaer Medal Award and was a member of the National Honor Society.  In the fall, Dalton will study Biotechnology at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Katherine M. Lake is the daughter of Eric and Julie Lake of Portland.  As a McAuley student, Lake was a member of the Art Club (Vice President), the National Honor Society, and served as Captain of both the Lacrosse and Soccer Teams her junior and senior years.  In addition to her volunteer work at the Frances Warde Convent, Lake received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, as well as SMAA 2nd Team All-Conference honors for Lacrosse.  Lake will continue her studies at Fordham University in the fall, where she will major in Psychology.

Mia L. Fisher is the daughter of Bill and Ruthanne Fisher of Cumberland.  While at McAuley, Fisher was a member of the National Honor Society, served as Key Club Editor and Secretary, and participated in Varsity Field Hockey (Captain), as well as the Seeds of Peace Program.  She was an AP Scholar and received the St. Anselm College Book Award, as well as SMAA All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Academic Team honors for Field Hockey.  Fisher will study Marketing and International Relations at James Madison University.

Mary E. McManus is the daughter of Edward and Margaret McManus of Bowdoin.  As a McAuley student, McManus was an active Ambassadors Club and Campus Ministry member (President), and served on the Student Council Executive Board.  In addition, McManus volunteered her time with St. John’s and St. Brigid Schools.  She was a National Honor Society member, the recipient of the Holy Cross Book Award, and a Maine Youth Leadership Ambassador.  McManus will be a Music Business major at New York University.
